Motor vehicle miles traveled increased by 0.2% in 2009 ( FHWA report ) after decreasing in 2008. If you look at the trend, 2009 looks like a small correction, and we can hope that the reduction is permanent.

Every new data point screams that peak miles isn’t a fluke. Stop building and widening roads already.
The story about St. Pete at the end of the USA article makes a really good case that fighting for decent bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure is well worth the effort.
